ILLEGAL WASTEWATER DISCHARGE BY MINNESOTA PLANT
NETS $4 MILLION IN FINES AND RESTITUTION
NETS $4 MILLION IN FINES AND RESTITUTION
On July 10, Darling International Inc. of Irving, Texas, was sentenced to pay a $4 million fine after the company pleaded guilty on Dec. 16, 1996, to five felony counts of violating the federal Clean Water Act. Charges include illegally discharging wastewater into the Blue Earth River, diluting wastewater samples and falsifying reports to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. One million dollars of the fine may be used for improvement of the Blue Earth River and $300,000 will be remitted for civil penalties. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
