(Kansas City, Kan., May 14, 2007) – More than $4 million in brownfields grant money was announced today by EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson to clean up and assess properties in nine communities and one state in Region 7. Springfield, Mo., was also selected to receive money to lend to eligible organizations for brownfields cleanup.
“Both urban and rural settings have been improved, from places in our inner cities to fields along our farmlands. For every one acre of reused brownfields, an estimated four and a half acres of unused green space is preserved,” said Region 7 Administrator John B. Askew.

Communities in 38 states were selected to receive brownfields grants to help revitalize former industrial and commercial sites, turning them from underutilized properties to productive community use.
Brownfields are sites where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse might be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
This year, 202 applicants nationally were selected to receive 294 assessment, revolving loan fund, and cleanup grants.
