To help members of Alaska’s development and construction industry better understand the requirements of federal storm water regulations, the Alaska Associated General Contractors (AGC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a series of informational workshops in Juneau, Anchorage, and Fairbanks.
Workshops are scheduled for Centennial Hall in Juneau (April 24), the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel (April 28), and the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel(April 30).
The purpose of the federal storm water runoff regulations for developers and construction firms is to ensure that soil from construction sites does not end up polluting Alaska’s streams, rivers, and lakes. The 1992 federal requirements for storm-water management have recently been expanded and now require smaller construction sites to manage storm-water run-off. The EPA plans to conduct inspections of Alaska construction sites to determine whether contractors are following the regulations.
Tailored specifically for the construction trade, each workshop will feature presentations by erosion control experts and EPA officials who will offer the latest in storm-water pollution control techniques and permit requirements. The experts will also be available to answer questions and will direct attendees to additional information resources.
- Topics covered in the workshops will include :
- Which construction activities require a storm water permit;
- How to apply for permit coverage for your site;
- New EPA requirements for construction sites that took effect last month;
- What you should expect during a site inspection; and
- Workable erosion and sediment controls for Alaska construction sites.
