ANNAPOLIS - The Maryland Forestry Boards Foundation has received a $5,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a one-week summer camp program for 48 high school students statewide interested in pursuing careers in forestry or other natural resource management fields.
The camp will provide hands-on environmental experiences in Savage River State Forest. Each county and Baltimore city will provide two students who are recruited by local boards through school systems, ecology clubs and other environmental organizations.
“This type of training program will provide positive outdoor experiences for students that will enrich their lives and educate them about potential careers in forestry and protecting the environment,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
