SECOND MEETING OF REVIEW PANEL FOR MTBE
The blue-ribbon panel created to review the use of MTBE and other oxygenates in gasoline will hold its second public meeting March 1-2 in Boston, Mass. The panel will be chaired by Daniel Greenbaum, President of the Health Effects Institute (HEI) of Cambridge, Mass. The EPA established the blue-ribbon panel in November 1998 to examine the use of oxygenates in gasoline and to gain a better understanding of the public health concerns raised by the discovery of MTBE in some water supplies. The panel will hear from regional and national experts within six months on the facts concerning oxygenate use in fuel and will issue a report to the EPA that will include specific recommendations on how to ensure public health protection and continued improvement in both air and water quality. In addition to invited presentations, the panel has set aside time for public comment on March 1. The panel will meet from 1:00-6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 1, and from 8:30-3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2 at the Hyatt Regency Harborside, Boston Logan International Airport, 101 Harborside Dr., Boston, Mass. Anyone desiring to make a brief statement should sign-up by 10:00 a.m. that day or call Karen Smith at 202-564-9674. The statements will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. The panel will also accept written submissions. They should be mailed to US EPA, 401 M St., SW, Mail Code 6406J (Attn: Blue-Ribbon Panel), Washington, D.C. 20460.Additional information regarding the meeting and oxygenate panel is available at: www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/fuels/oxypanel/blueribb.him
