TRI WEB SITE REVISED, 1998 DATA REPORT COMPLETED

EPA has launched a revised version of the Internet data analysis search tool, TRI Explorer, which triples the amount of toxic emissions information previously available. The Agency also has issued a 360 page detailed data report of the 1998 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). The revised TRI data analysis web site, TRI Explorer version 3, provides a number of new enhancements to the initial tool released on May 11. The new enhancements and additional search capabilities were developed in response to requests from the public and stakeholders and include data on facility transfers off-site and waste management (recycling, energy recovery and treatment information). EPA is continuing to develop future enhancements to optimize the research tool’s flexibility and ease of use. The new report, entitled the “1998 Toxics Release Inventory Public Data Release,” provides an in-depth analysis of the national TRI data for both the manufacturing industries, the original industries monitored since 1988, and the seven newly included major industrial sectors, electrical utilities, coal mining, metal mining, chemical wholesalers, petroleum bulk plants and terminals, solvent recovery and hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal. It is an addendum to the report released on May 11 and the state-by-state fact sheets released on August 10. The TRI program requires companies to report quantities of toxic chemicals that their facilities annually release into the air, water and land. The analysis released today is provided annually to assess the most recent national TRI data by chemical, by industry and by state. Many states implement pollution prevention or toxic use reduction laws using TRI data as the framework for environmental accounting. State Data Files for the 1998 data will be released shortly. These files include revisions made up to March 29, 2000 (the frozen data set used to produce the 1998 TRI report). The data include: raw information, as submitted by facilities on the Form R and Form A; summary and calculated fields which mirror the data presentation in the annual report to reflect facilities’ on-site and off-site release of TRI chemicals and other on-site management; and transfers to off-site locations for further management.
