Public invited to Comment About Rules On Air Emissions from Power Plants and Industries

BOSTON – The public is invited to comment tomorrow on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program for controlling new industrial and utility sources of air pollution. The meeting for public comment will be held tomorrow, July 17, at the Double Tree Guest Suites, 400 Soldiers Field Road, in Boston. It will run from 9:30 am to 4 pm, with an additional evening session from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.

The meeting focuses on a "background document" about the New Source Review (NSR) program and its impact on new utility and refinery capacity, energy efficiency, and environmental protection.

New Source Review is a Clean Air Act program that requires the best pollution control equipment to be installed when a new source of air pollution is built, or when a pollution source makes a modification that significantly increases emissions.

For several years, EPA has explored ways to make New Source Review more efficient while maintaining environmental safeguards. The May 2001 National Energy Policy Report recommended that EPA consult with other federal agencies to review the regulations and see how they affect the environment, energy efficiency, and investment in the capacity of new utilities and refineries to generate power.
