We remain deeply concerned that the full House failed to restore nearly $200 million in cuts that the House Committee on Appropriations made to EPA’s 2000 budget for our programs for cleaner water, healthier air, cleaning up toxic waste sites, and enforcement of environmental laws. This undermines our basic ability to protect the nation’s public health and environment.
Additionally, an astonishing amount of our budget has been "earmarked" by individual members of Congress for special projects in their districts. The staggering level of earmarks - now up to almost $352 million - is taken directly from budget money used to support national environmental programs. And we also remain strongly opposed to anti-environmental riders. We still want to work with Congress in a bipartisan fashion to correct these problems and move forward in a positive direction on behalf of the American people.
