EPA POSTS FEDERAL REGISTER NOTICE ON EMSs
The Office of Reinvention submitted a Federal Register Notice which was posted Thursday, March 12, 1998 that presents EPA's position on Environmental Management Systems (EMSs). The Agency supports and encourages the use of EMSs including those based on the ISO14001 standard that focuses on improved environmental performance and compliance, as well as source reductions and system performance. An evaluation process, using pilot projects to test the utility of EMSs, is explained in the notice. The pilot projects will be especially significant in exploring the types of information being collected from participants and methods of sharing the information in a meaningful way. The notice solicits comments on the types of information to be collected. Proposed categories are: environmental performance, compliance, pollution prevention, environmental conditions, costs/benefits to participating facilities, and stakeholder participation and confidence.
