FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 1996 EPA ADMINISTRATOR BROWNER TO JOIN SENATORS LEAHY AND JEFFORDS, CONGRESSMEN SANDERS, GOVERNOR DEAN, N.Y. STATE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSIONER ZAGATA AND BURLINGTON MAYOR CLAVELLE AT LAKE CHAMPLAIN BASIN SCIENCE CENTER IN BURLINGTON, VT TO ANNOUNCE LANDMARK PLAN FOR LAKE CHAMPLAIN BASIN
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol M. Browner will join Senators Patrick Leahy and James Jeffords, Congressman Bernard Sanders, Governor Howard Dean, N.Y. State Environmental Commissioner Zagata and Mayor Peter Clavelle at the Lake Champlain Basin Science Center in Burlington, VT at 2 p.m. on July 1. Administrator Browner will make an important announcement about pollution prevention and clean up plans for the Lake Champlain Basin.
Browner will also discuss a report -- "Liquid Assets: A Summertime Perspective on the Importance of Clean Water to the Nation's Economy" -- that demonstrates that clean water is a vital commodity that provides a stimulus for local economies. The report outlines the impact of clean water on regional economies in areas surrounding the Great Lakes, and identifies five key economic sectors that rely on clean water to promote profits, create local jobs and boost local economies.
Browner will discuss the importance of the Lake Champlain Basin plan, the "Liquid Assets" report, and the Clinton Administration's commitment to ensuring that clean water continues to keep our communities healthy and thriving.
