FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
No. 06-OPA006
CHICAGO (Jan. 11, 2006) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with Multi-Cast Corp. on alleged clean-air violations at the company's secondary aluminum production plant at 225 E. Linfoot St., Wauseon, Ohio.
The agreement, which includes a $10,000 penalty, resolves EPA allegations that Multi-Cast failed to test for dioxins and furans at its 12 aluminum melting furnaces and failed to notify EPA of its compliance status. In addition, EPA said the company failed to comply with labeling and reporting requirements.
EPA discovered the alleged violations during a March 10, 2005, facility inspection. On June 6, EPA notified Multi-Cast of the allegations.
There is evidence that dioxins may cause liver damage and probably cause cancer in humans, and furans may cause cancer in humans.
