(04/27/09) LOS ANGELES - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have honored Irvine, Calif.-based non-profit developer Jamboree Housing Corporation with an Energy Star award for its efforts at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency.
The Jamboree Housing Corporation serves families and seniors with a median household income of $19,000.
“The EPA is proud to honor the Jamboree Housing Corporation with its Energy Star award,” said Deborah Jordan, the EPA’s Air Division director for the Pacific Southwest. “Energy efficiency improves the quality of life through reduced pollution, lowered energy costs, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions of communities."
In 2008 Jamboree installed Energy Star appliances in 663 units of affordable housing and plans on installing Energy Star appliances in all future constructions. This includes 90 units under construction, another 64 units under renovation and an additional 775 units of new construction or renovation in predevelopment over the next two years throughout California.
In 2008, Americans, with the help of Energy Star, saved $19 billion on their energy bills and avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 29 million vehicles. More than 2.5 billion Energy Star-qualified products have been sold since 2000. Nearly 940,000 new homes and more than 6200 office buildings, schools, hospitals, public buildings and other space types have earned the Energy Star. Energy Star-qualified products, homes, and buildings provide the quality, features, and personal comfort today's consumers expect.
Energy Star was introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increased energy efficiency. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Star offers businesses and consumers energy-efficient solutions to save energy and money, and help protect the environment for future generations.
