(01/18/04) On Jan. 7, Judith E. Ayres, Assistant Administrator for International Affairs for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Dr. Plodprasop Suraswadi, Permanent Secretary of the Royal Thai Government’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), signed an agreement extending the two countries’ formal collaboration on environmental protection through October 2009. Joint projects in 2004 and beyond will include work on environmental impact assessment, enhancing the technical and institutional capabilities of MONRE’s regional offices and improved management and disposal of hazardous substances. Since 1999, EPA and MONRE have worked together on air quality programs for urban centers and on building lab capacity, among a number of other projects. The EPA-MONRE Agreement is part of a more than a decade of EPA work with Thailand. Since 1991, EPA has been a partner in the U.S.-Asia Environmental Partnership, a US-AID led effort to foster environmental cooperation between the United States and countries in Asia, including Thailand.
