EPA AWARDS ENVIRONMENTAL GRANT TO MILILANI COMPLEX IN HAWAII

     $20,440 grant will fund a groundwater project developed by elementary school students

      SAN FRANCISCO --The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced the award of a $20,440 environmental education grant to the Mililani Complex in Mililani, Hawaii.  

     The project, called Mililani 2000+: Establishing Environmental Quality Standards for Mililani, will establish a partnership between Mililani schools, the state of Hawaii Department of Health, City and County of Honolulu, and the Mililani Town Association to develop and implement a groundwater quality monitoring program. The program will be developed by the gifted and talented students in grades 3-12 at four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.

     Students will collect samples at each school and selected homes in the community to establish a baseline for a multi-year study. They will simultaneously compile a history of the Mililani water system by performing on-line and library research, and interviewing residents. High school students will work with lower grade students to help with data organization, analysis, and interpretation.  The culminating event of the first year will be an environmental summit open to students, parents, other community residents, and government agencies to share findings and conclusions.      Including the Hawaii grant, the EPA awarded grants totaling $160,000 to 19 organizations in California, Nevad and Arizona. Recipients of the grants include school districts, colleges and universities, non-profit organizations, and city, county, tribal, regional and state government agencies.

     The grants, awarded under the National Environmental Education Act, provide funding to support projects that will address significant environmental issues.
