CHICAGO (March 12, 2009) - Data collected by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 at Illinois Beach State Park in November 2007 has been further analyzed by the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in a report now available at www.atsdr.cdc.gov/sites/illinois_beach_state_park/.
In its 2007 study, EPA simulated typical beach visitor activities such as running, volleyball and digging in the sand.
EPA, as well as ATSDR, has recommended that Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which manages the park, continue asbestos monitoring, regular beach sweeps and advising visitors about the presence of asbestos-containing material.
