FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Kansas City, Kan., June 10, 2008) - EPA has recognized the Centralia R-IV School District in Centralia, Mo., for its successful efforts in integrated pest management practices.
"EPA appreciates the commitment of the Centralia faculty and staff in reducing the risks of pests and pesticides in their school. These efforts help protect children from environmental hazards and make the schools safer for everyone," said EPA Region 7 Administrator John B. Askew.
The Centralia R-IV school district and its pest control company have made definite progress:
- Pesticide applications have been reduced by 90 percent and the contractor is complying with the recommendation to use pesticides only as needed.
- The pest control contractor has increased and improved its pest monitoring.
- The reduced classroom clutter and improved sanitation have decreased the number of brown recluse spiders and roaches in key spots.
- The grounds crew is using irrigation, aeration and mowing height as the core of the landscape pest management program.
EPA's Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program provides financial assistance to carry out projects that address pesticide risk reduction in schools.
