EPA Administrator Johnson presents Dr. Gordon Forward with Presidential Award for Volunteers

CHICAGO (July 31, 2007) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen L. Johnson today honored Dr. Gordon Forward with the President's Volunteer Service Award at the U. S. Business Council for Sustainable Development's summer meeting in Chicago.
Dr. Forward, a member of the University of California at San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering Board of Advisors, has helped foster a better understanding of sustainable development among students and faculty. Since 2002, Dr. Forward has volunteered his time to promote economically sustainable development worldwide. In his dealings with business leaders across the nation, Dr. Forward strongly advocates sustainability as a valuable component of innovative and effective business strategies.
"Today we honor Dr. Gordon Forward for answering President Bush's call to serve a cause greater than himself," said Administrator Johnson. "Dedicated volunteers like Dr. Forward are inspiring others to join them in delivering America a brighter, healthier future."
Dr. Forward holds a Doctor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has also served as an advisor to the Stanford Business School, the Queens University School of Business and the Department of Materials Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
In his travels across the country, Administrator Johnson meets with individuals like Dr. Forward who are answering the call to volunteer service, environmental education and pollution prevention.
President Bush has called on all Americans to make a difference in their communities through volunteer service. He created USA Freedom Corps, an Office of the White House, to strengthen and expand volunteer service.

The President's Volunteer Service Award was created at the President's direction by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. The award is available to youth ages 14 and under who have completed 50 or more hours of volunteer service; to individuals 15 and older who have completed 100 or more hours; and to families or groups who have completed 200 or more hours.
