(Dallas, Texas – August 1, 2007) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded $115,900 to the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma. The tribe will use the funds to support its Brownfields Response program. Brownfields are vacant, abandoned, or under-used properties where redevelopment may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of environmental contamination. Tribal staff will assist eligible parties in identifying the presence of contamination and plan for cleanup if contaminants are found. In some limited cases, the tribe will assist in or oversee cleanup that leads to redevelopment.
