U.S. EPA settles hazardous waste case with L.A.-area environmental lab

SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced it has reached a settlement with a Garden Grove company over its failure to file biannual hazardous waste reports in 1999 and in 2001, and to properly label and close some of its hazardous waste containers.

With this action CalScience Environmental Laboratories, Inc. will pay a penalty of $18,260. The company, located at 7440 Lincoln Way, is an environmental laboratory that has been in business since 1986 and, according to the EPA, it is a large quantity generator of hazardous wastes including nitric and hydrochloric acids, cadmium and lead.

"These reporting requirements ensure that the government and communities have accurate information on hazardous wastes. Proper storage of wastes protects against potential mismanagement," said Amy Zimpfer, acting director of the EPA's waste division for the Pacific Southwest Region. "The EPA's action is intended to ensure that each of these requirements is effectively implemented."

The EPA discovered the violations during an inspection of the facility in 2002.
