PHILADELPHIA -- The EPA has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health to hold free workshops throughout the city on reducing lead hazards in homes.

Many of the workshops, coordinated by the city’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, will be held at paint and hardware stores for the stores’ staff and customers. Other workshops will be held for community groups to target teachers, parents and students. Most of the workshops will be in areas of the city where lead levels in children have been significantly above the national average.

"This project is designed to increase public awareness so that people can understand the importance of identifying, monitoring, reducing, and preventing lead poisoning," said W. Michael McCabe, regional administrator for the mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. In the mid-Atlantic region, 25 grant recipients include schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $3 million was awarded in 1999.
