U.S. EPA HOLDS PUBLIC MEETING ON SCOTTSDALE SUPERFUND SITE

    (San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced it will hold an open house and a public meeting to discuss cleanup activities at the North Indian Bend Wash Superfund site (IBW North), Scottsdale, Ariz.

     The public meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 27, 1995, at the Scottsdale Senior center, 7375 E. Second St., Scottsdale. U.S. EPA, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and city of Scottsdale staff will also be available to answer questions.  Representatives of the governmental agencies will discuss the groundwater treatment plant at Pima Road and the new treatment plant planned for Scottsdale and Paradise Valley.  They will also discuss the results of soils investigations and the location and migration of contaminated groundwater.

     The Indian Bend Wash Superfund site, including IBW North, was placed on the federal National Priorities List (NPL), a list of the nation's potentially most hazardous waste sites, in 1983.

     IBW North was added to NPL after industrial solvents including trichloroethylene (TCE) were found in several Scottsdale-area drinking water wells at concentrations above state action levels and federal drinking water standards in 1981.  As a result, local water providers stopped using those wells for drinking water.
