(Bainbridge Island, WA – Oct. 18, 2006) Today, Acting EPA Regional Administrator for the Northwest Ron Kreizenbeck will be celebrating World Water Monitoring Day with fifth grade students at IslandWood Outdoor Learning Center, Bainbridge Island, Washington. Congressman Jay Inslee will also participate in the celebration.

World Water Monitoring Day gives youth and their families the opportunity to get involved and learn about the health of their local watersheds by participating in water monitoring activities. Between Sept. 18, and Oct. 18, 2006, citizens around the world visit local streams, rivers, lakes or wetlands to test for basic water quality indicators.

“It is important to involve students in science and stewardship opportunities that prepare them for responsible action, and to ensure a healthy Puget Sound,” said Ron Kreizenbeck.

Today, at the IslandWood Outdoor Learning Center, Kreizenbeck and Inslee will be working with fifth grade students from T.T. Minor Elementary in Seattle, to perform monitoring experiments on Mac’s Pond. Some of the tests that they will be conducting are; turbidity, temperature, oxygen levels and PH levels.

IslandWood is a unique 255-acre outdoor learning center designed to provide exceptional learning experiences and inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship.
