16 FEDERAL AGENCIES SPONSOR 10 BROWNFIELDS SHOWCASE COMMUNITIES
EPA, in partnership with 15 other federal agencies, is seeking applications for the Brownfields Showcase Communities project. The multi-agency group will select 10 communities across the country to receive targeted technical and financial assistance. Brownfields are abandoned, idled or underused industrial and commercial properties where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived contamination. The showcase communities will serve as national models demonstrating the benefits of coordinated attention to brownfields. Part of the Brownfields National Partnership announced by Vice President Gore in May 1997, the Showcase Communities will be the centerpiece of the Administration’s brownfields efforts. The selection criteria will include brownfields potential, community need, local commitment, partnership opportunities, planning, environmental justice and replicability. Communities can apply by submitting a two-page Statement of Interest by Sept. 19 to Gayle Rice or Sven-Erik Kaiser, U.S. EPA, (mailcode 5101), 401 M St. S.W., Washington, D.C. 20460. A Federal Register notice was published on Aug. 20. Further information can be obtained on the Internet at https://www.epa.gov/brownfields.
