Cleanup Complete at Markham, Illinois, Dump Site

(CHICAGO – June 23, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has completed a $400,000 cleanup at a 12-acre uncontrolled dump in Markham, Illinois. The site is near the intersection of I-294 and 159th Street, south of Chicago.
In April, EPA began removing and disposing of 2,000 tons of contaminated soil. EPA also uncovered and safely disposed of 110 containers of hazardous material. The State of Illinois began the cleanup in 2010 by disposing of discarded tires, chemical drums, compressed gas cylinders, and numerous containers of solid and hazardous waste.
