NEW MAGNESIUM INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP TO
VOLUNTARILY REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING EMISSIONS
VOLUNTARILY REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING EMISSIONS
During the Earth Technologies Forum this week, EPA, on September 27, joined 12 U.S. magnesium producing and casting companies in a new partnership aimed at reducing emissions of the greenhouse gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). SF6 has been identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as the most potent of all greenhouse gases. The partners represent 100 percent of U.S. primary production and include the five largest domestic magnesium casting companies. By 2005, the partnership is predicted to prevent the release of 270,000 pounds of SF6 into the atmosphere that would have occurred otherwise. Magnesium companies that join the partnership agree to estimate their current emissions of SF6, then evaluate and implement cost-effective pollution prevention measures to reduce them. EPA will serve as a clearinghouse for technical information on successful strategies to reduce emissions. Magnesium is a natural metallic element used both as an alloy of aluminum in various products such as soda cans, and as a lightweight structural metal in car and airplane parts and in hand-held tools. Charter partners in the SF6 Emission Reduction Partnership for the Magnesium Industry are Acme Die Casting, Northbrook, Ill.; Chicago White Metal Casting, Inc., Bensenville, Ill.; Del Mar Die Casting Company, Gardena, Calif.; Diemakers, Inc.,Monroe City, Mo.; Hyatt Die Cast & Engineering Corporation, Cypress, Calif.; Lunt Manufacturing Co., Inc.,Schaumburg, Ill.; Magnesium Corporation of America, Salt Lake City, Utah; Magnesium Products of America, Inc.,Strathroy, Ontario; Northwest Alloys, Inc., Addy, Wash.; Product Technologies, Inc., Maple Lake, Minn.; Spartan Light Metal Products, Inc., Sparta, Ill., and Wyman-Gordon Investment Castings, Inc., Tilton, N.H. The Earth Technologies Forum (earthforum.com), held Sept. 27-29 at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill, expected to draw over 800 individuals from 40 countries to discuss ozone protection and current climate protection technologies in the marketplace. The conference is sponsored by the International Climate Change Partnership (ICCP), and the Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy, in cooperation with the EPA, the United Nations Environment Programme, and several other government and industry groups, and international government departments. For more information on the magnesium partnership, phone Scott Bartos at (202) 564-9167; on the CHP award, phone Christian Fellner at (202) 564-2664.
