AUTO BODY SHOP CITED FOR WETLANDS VIOLATIONS

EDGEWATER, Md. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has cited B&B Auto Body Shop for violating federal regulations by filling in protected wetlands adjacent to Glebe Creek in Edgewater, Anne Arundel County, Md. The wetlands are located next to the body shop.

According to the EPA, B&B Auto Body Shop filled in a small area of wetlands - part of a drainage ditch - on its property at 233 Mayo Road from September 1995 to the present.

EPA’s July 21, 1999 complaint seeks a $16,500 penalty for the company’s alleged failure to obtain a required permit before filling in protected wetlands.

Under the Clean Water Act, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit is required before dredged or fill material may be discharged into wetlands areas. The permit requirement is designed to minimize the destruction of wetlands, which serve a number of critical environmental and economic functions -- including flood control, water filtration, and wildlife habitat.

The company has the right to a hearing to contest the alleged violations and proposed penalty.
