OHIO MAN SENTENCED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND TAX VIOLATIONS

Daniel L. Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Cincinatti, Ohio, on March 24, for his felony convictions on charges of conspiracy to violate federal environmental laws and tax evasion. Brown is the owner of Future Finishes Inc., of Butler County, Ohio, and Quality Metal Finishing Co., in Hamilton County, Ohio. He was sentenced to a year and a day in prison for one felony count of conspiring to violate the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Brown's sentencing was for the unlawful discharge of electroplating wastewater containing cyanide, copper and zinc into the public sewer systems and for the unlawful transportation, storage and treating of electroplating sludge from Future Finishes. Brown was also sentenced to a year and a day in prison on each of three felony counts of filing false personal income tax returns. The four prison terms will be served concurrently. In addition, Brown was ordered to pay a fine of $8,200. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation with the assistance of EPA's National Enforcement Investigations Center.
