ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINES SENTENCED
Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. (RCCL), a Liberian corporation which is headquartered in Miami, Fla., was sentenced on Oct. 14, to pay an $8 million fine by the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico in San Juan for multiple offenses including: conspiracy to discharge oil at sea, false statements and obstructing justice by destroying evidence. RCCL has also agreed to provide an additional $1 million for environmental projects in the territorial sea of Puerto Rico and South Florida. In addition, the court placed RCCL on five years probation, during which the conduct of the company will be closely monitored and periodic reports will be made to the court and the government detailing the company’s environmental compliance. The discharge of oil into the ocean can cause significant harm to fish and other aquatic life. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the FBI, the Military Sealift Command and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
