- Denver -- -The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today proposed adding the Bountiful/Woods Cross 5th South PCE Plume site, Bountiful, Utah to EPA’s National Priorities List (NPL) of Superfund sites. This announcement begins a sixty-day period during which citizens may send EPA their comments on the proposed listing.
The NPL is a published list of U.S. hazardous waste sites that are eligible for long-term cleanup under the Superfund program. Listing makes the site eligible to receive federal funds for cleanup while EPA seeks to recover costs from those responsible for the contamination. Listing also allows EPA to use Superfund money for cleanup when there are no responsible parties who can pay for the work.
The Bountiful/Woods Cross 5th South PCE Plume site is located from approximately 750 S to 400 N, and from 500 to 1100 West in Bountiful, West Bountiful, and Woods Cross, Davis County, Utah. The site is bounded by private residences and agricultural land on the west; commercial properties and residences to the south, industrial sites and residential properties to the north, an interstate highway, railroad tracks, and commercial properties progressively farther east.
Samples taken by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality identified contaminants such as volatile organic compounds in the ground water underlying the site. Regional municipal drinking water wells are within a four mile radius of the site and could become contaminated with these compounds. At present, no drinking water wells are contaminated.
Listing the site provides funding for cleanup work and also guarantees the public an opportunity to participate in cleanup decisions.
