SIPESVILLE, Pa. -- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a
$2 million grant to the Lincoln Township Municipal Authority in Somerset County to develop an additional drinking water source for residents of Sipesville and Lincoln Township.

The authority needs to replace the existing 80 year-old drinking water system that experienced severe water shortages during the past two years and forced residents to resort to mandatory water rationing.

We are pleased to help communities eliminate potential serious health hazards associated with an inadequate supply of water for drinking and fire protection,” said Bradley Campbell, EPA mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

The authority began work on a new system in 1997 with loan funding, and this grant will allow it complete the project. The new water system will serve existing customers and also provide drinking water and fire protection service to a manufacturing plant and the Somerset Historical Center. Construction is scheduled to begin this month.

The grant will reimburse the authority for 74 percent of the project costs. The balance of the project is being funded with state and local funds.
