PHILADELPHIA – A $406,417 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will help 40 families in the Khedive area of Jefferson Township, Greene County receive safe drinking water. The agency awarded the grant to the Southwestern Pennsylvania Water Authority in Greene County to extend the authority’s water transmission main to the Khedive area.

Homes that had lost their underground source of drinking water due to coal mining activities will now be supplied with potable water that meets state and federal health standards.

“EPA is pleased to help support local officials with these type of urgent drinking water projects. This funding will help the families secure their need for safe drinking water,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

Problems in the area had caused some families to leave. Other families were being supplied with trucked-in drinking water or with new wells and treatment facilities. Extending the water transmission main will also bring hope for revitalizing the area’s economy.

EPA’s grant will pay 55 percent of the project’s $738,940 eligible construction costs. Local funds will cover the remaining costs. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has endorsed the project.
