EPA COLLABORATES WITH NORTH AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK
ON U.S.-MEXICO BORDER WATER PROJECTS
ON U.S.-MEXICO BORDER WATER PROJECTS
EPA, in its commitment to improve drinking water supplies and wastewater operations along the U.S.-Mexico border, has entered into a cooperative agreement with the North American Development Bank (NADBANK), and will contribute $170 million to a fund established by NADBANK to administer grants for water and wastewater projects within 100 kilometers on either side of the border. NADBANK is a binational institution established under NAFTA to provide financing for high-priority environmental infrastructure in the border region. Under this agreement, NADBANK will formulate project proposals which would use funds from other sources and its loan and guaranty program, together with the EPA funds, to deal with the most serious water/wastewater problems in the neediest communities. The amount of any community contribution to a project will depend on its ability to pay. EPA must approve any project for which its funds are being used. The agreement is part of a continuing commitment to NADBANK and other institutions to assist in promoting environmental and health improvements along the border.
