PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $303,600 grant to the City of York, Pennsylvania to upgrade the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

Funding will be used to continue replacing three belt-filter presses used to dry out sewage sludge, with two state-of-the-art high-speed centrifuges. The centrifuges will produce a drier sludge cake that will reduce disposal costs and require less maintenance.

“Infrastructure improvements, resulting in a more efficient system, will reduce the amount of waste and provide for a more cost-effective solution for wastewater treatment,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The grant will pay 55 percent of the eligible portion of the construction costs. The balance of the project is being funded with local funds.
