NORFOLK -- The Old Dominion University Research Foundation has received a $5,000 environmental education grant from the EPA to purchase calculator based labs that will be used by Norfolk area high school students to collect environmental data on their campuses.

Data collected by the students will be evaluated by a group of science educators from the university. Software will be used to create maps depicting environmental data and to track changes and trends.

“Participating high school students will benefit by becoming directly involved in an actual scientific investigation. It will give them an understanding of the changes taking place in the environment,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
