EPA Beginning Work in Willington, Conn. to Remove Contamination

(Boston, Mass. - September 7, 2007) - Beginning Monday, Sept. 10th, EPA and its contractors will begin work to carry out a short-term cleanup at the CadleRock Properties Site on Squaw Hollow Road, in Ashford/Willington, Conn.

The CadleRock Property is 335 acres of mostly open, undeveloped land located on 12 bordering land parcels. EPA will perform removal actions in an area located in Willington on Lot 11, referred to as the Northwest Disposal Area (NWDA), where heavy metals such as antimony, arsenic, barium, copper, lead and zinc have been identified at elevated levels.

Removal action activities will include clearing an area to provide access to the contaminated soil; constructing a temporary access road from Route 44 to the NWDA; constructing staging areas and a command post along Route 44; excavating, treating, transporting and disposing of contaminated soil to an approval disposal facility; conducting necessary de-watering and watering operations to help the excavation; and conduct site stabilization and restoration activities in areas disturbed by the removal activities. The entire process should take about a year.

EPA's cleanup will address immediate threats at the CadleRock property and begin the process to restore all of the affected areas on the Site. EPA's workers are coordinating with the Conn. Dept. of Environmental Protection and the towns of Ashford and Willington to mitigate potential hazards through the removal process.
