WHAT: EPA Administrator Christie Whitman will give a speech at the Environmental Summit meeting. Her address will focus on the President's Clear Skies Initiative, which sets stringent emissions caps on power plants for three air pollutants: nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and mercury. Over the next decade, these mandatory cuts will remove a total of 35 million more tons of those pollutants from the air than will be eliminated by the current Clean Air Act. On February 14, 2002, the President announced the Clear Skies Initiative, which is the most aggressive legislative improvements to the Clean Air Act since 1990.
