FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Sept. 28, 2009) - The City of Cedar Falls, Iowa, will host two Smart Growth Initiative workshops and an open house on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The workshops will focus on integrating smart growth concepts into city development codes, and creating a vision for the redevelopment of Center Street.

Cedar Falls is one of five disaster-impacted communities in Iowa selected to receive technical assistance under EPA's Smart Growth Implementation Assistance program.

Local officials will be joined by representatives from EPA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Rebuild Iowa Office (RIO), and the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) to discuss options with the public.

The first workshop will provide an opportunity for builders, developers and the public to learn more about smart growth principles and how businesses can benefit from those principles' impacts on communities. The second workshop will allow the public to share ideas about the redevelopment of Center Street in northern Cedar Falls. The open house will provide a venue for participants to learn about the use of smart growth principles in Cedar Falls and to view drawings of the redevelopment concepts for Center Street.

The two workshops will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Cedar Falls City Hall, 220 Clay Street; and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at North Cedar Elementary School, 2419 Fern Avenue.

The Open House will be held Thursday, Oct. 1, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Cedar Falls City Hall, 220 Clay Street.

EPA, in partnership with FEMA, RIO and IDED, will support similar activities in New Hartford, Cedar Rapids, Coralville and Iowa City, the remaining four communities impacted by flood disaster. Funding for these projects is provided by EPA and FEMA.
