NEPA SUPERFUND REMOVAL UNDERWAY AT THE AAA METAL REFINISHING SITE, TAMPA, HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has begun a Superfund hazardous substance removal at the AAA Metal Refinishing site in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment.

The removal is taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB) and will include:

inventory, analysis, and preparation of drums and container contents;

transportation and disposal of hazardous substances and contaminated debris; and

excavation and disposal of any contaminated soils.



The removal is expected to be completed by May 1999 at an estimated cost of $844,000.

AAA Metal Refinishing operated as a metal polishing and plating facility from early 1992 to 1996. The site currently is abandoned. The EPA was contacted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for site assessment and possible removal action. It appears that numerous spills have occurred throughout the premises. The site consists of a building containing vats, drums, and small containers of waste. Contaminants of concern include chromium, copper, cyanide, and nickel.
