EPA Awards $950,200 to Hampden Township Sewer Authority

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. -- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $950,200 grant to the Hampden Township Sewer Authority in Cumberland County to upgrade its sewage treatment facilities.

Funds will be used to design and construct sewer lines and a pump station to improve service to existing residential users and increase public sanitary sewer access to support new commercial development.

“Wastewater infrastructure is often overlooked, but it is a basic health and environmental necessity for any community or development project,” said Bradley Campbell, EPA mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

The project, to be completed in three phases, will include:

• eliminating overloading at the pump station in the Roth Lane section of the township;
• extending sewer lines for existing residents and businesses in the northeastern part of the township; and
• providing service to the Cumberland Technology Park, currently under construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2001 and should take about one year to complete. The EPA grant will reimburse the authority for 55 percent of the project costs. Local funds will cover the balance of the project.
