University of Louisville Awarded EPA Grant

(Atlanta, July 5, 2005) The University of Louisville is one of six recipients nationally that will receive up to a total of $300,000 in Brownfields training, research and technical assistance grants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will fund the recipients for periods ranging from one to five years. The grants will be used to focus attention on environmental and human health conditions in disadvantaged communities to stimulate economic and beneficial uses of brownfields projects.

The University of Louisville will target historically-challenged areas for redevelopment and conduct workshops on building constructive community participation in brownfields redevelopment.

Funding for the brownfields training, research, and technical assistance grants and cooperative agreements is authorized under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA OR Superfund). EPA awards grants and cooperative agreements through a ranking system that includes factors relating to community need, impact on human health and the environment. Brownfields training and research, technical assistance grants are available to eligible government applicants and non-profit organizations including public universities.
