NORTHAMPTON COUNTY RECEIVES GRANT TO STUDY WATER AND SEWER

Release Date: 2/5/1999
Contact Information: Bonnie Smith (215) 814-5543

PHILADELPHIA - This week, the County of Northampton, Virginia received a $30,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to analyze various water and sewage treatment options for the small community of Bayview.

Bayview is located just south of Cheriton and east of U.S. Route 13 in the Delmarva area. The community consists of approximately 40 units of severely substandard rental homes and approximately 12 repairable owner-occupied houses.

Approximately 42 families currently rely on pit privies as their source of sewage disposal. Until recently, the same families shared shallow, hand-driven wells and outdoor hand pumps as the only available source of drinking water.

The grant issued this week will help the community develop a plan for water and sewer treatment in Bayview. With this critical information, the community can then apply for up to $3 million in federal funding for the construction of the water and sewer systems, housing rehabilitation, and community redevelopment.

Today, thanks to a previous EPA grant, drinking water is provided to most families from deep wells that are shared by several families and accessed by outdoor water faucets.
