EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON JANUARY 12, 1999 IN COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA REGARDING THE PALMETTO RECYCLING SUPERFUND SITE
Release Date: 01/08/1999
Contact Information: Carl Terry, EPA Press and Media Relations, 404-562-8325
The meeting will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Fairlawn Community Center, 9128 Wilson Boulevard in Columbia. Officials from EPA, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will provide information, answer questions, and address citizen concerns about current and planned activities to address site cleanup.
The 1.5-acre Palmetto Recycling site was used for the reclamation of lead from batteries. Contaminants of concern include lead, barium and chromium. SCDHEC removed more than 100 drums of caustic waste, 10,800 gallons of contaminated water and approximately 364 tons of contaminated soils. Although many cleanup activities have occurred, the site requires additional cleanup for long-term protection of human health and the environment.
Persons interested in obtaining additional information are encouraged to contact Cynthia Peurifoy, Community Relations Coordinator, or Yvonne Jones, Remedial Project Manager, at 1-800-435-9233.
