PHILADELPHIA - - EPA encourages you to check out ways to save energy, money, and protect the environment:
1. With summer on the way and energy costs skyrocketing, Americans are looking for ways to cool their homes, stay comfortable and save money. When you reduce the amount of energy used in your home, you save money on energy bills, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are harmful to the environment. To learn more about energy saving tips that are good for your wallet and the environment, visit EPA’s Energy Star at Home at www.energystar.gov
2. As the summer heat goes up so does the need to take special care on days when ozone pollution, smog, is expected to be high. Listen for air quality advisories that let people know the air quality is unhealthy, especially for people with lung problems, like asthma. Keep in mind, children and even active adults, should be careful about prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors on bad air days.
3. On a hot summer day, major cities like Baltimore, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia are 6 to 8 degrees hotter than surrounding areas. To keep your home or business cool, EPA encourages you to consider saving money and energy by installing 'cool roofs' - - light-colored roof systems to keep you and your neighborhood cooler. Visit EPA's Energy Star program on the web for more information.
