Louisiana Students Win EPA Awards for Environmental Projects

    Cenla Pride in Alexandria, La., will receive two Environmental Education Grants totaling $11,554  from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The two selected projects increase environmental awareness throughout the community.

     "The creativity, enthusiasm and commitment of volunteers will help ensure that our environment is protected for future generations. These projects are powerful examples of what can be accomplished when concerned individuals work together to improve their neighborhoods and communities. Students involved in these projects are shining reminders of the many youth who regularly perform meaningful volunteer activities in neighborhoods throughout our country," Regional Administrator Gregg Cooke said.

     Cenla Pride's Environmental Action Center will receive $7,500 to educate residents about area environmental issues, possible solutions to local environmental problems and steps citizens can take to protect the environment of their neighborhoods. The center reaches all segments of the community with hands-on exercises, interactive activities and field trips developed for children and adults.

     The Water Festival for Students and the Public will receive $4,054. The project emphasizes the importance of clean water to all living things. Festival activities illustrate nature's water cycle and show how urban runoff from rainstorms and improper watering can damage water resources.

     This year Region 6 received nearly 75 entries from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Fifteen groups were selected to receive nearly $150,000 in Environmental Education grants.

     Since 1992, EPA has received between $2 and $3 million in grant funding per year and  has awarded about 1,700 grants nationwide.
