Texas Environmental Projects Receive EPA Grants

      Five projects in Texas received environmental education grants totaling $45,848 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The projects increase environmental awareness while encouraging students to pursue careers in environmental fields.

      "Our environment's future depends on our children's understanding of environmental issues and their ingenuity in creating solutions.  Environmental education projects that provide real world contexts and results are the best way to foster these abilities," EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene said.

      The Council for Environmental Education of Houston received $16,788 for its project, "Adopt-A-Team WET School," a series of workshops designed to help urban middle school teachers in the San Antonio metropolitan area incorporate activities from the "WET in the City Curriculum and Activity Guide" into their curricula.

      The Pollock Central ISD received $5,000 for its project, "Teacher Training Using the Central Outdoor Classroom," where environmental studies in the forest ecosystem will be taught through lessons and field experiences.

      The Council for Environmental Education of Houston received $13,000 for its project, "Migratory Bird Conservation Education in Schools," which will provide training for Houston area urban middle school teachers to implement classroom lessons and projects relating to bird conservation.

      The Groves Educational Foundation of Crockett received $6,000 for its "Youth, Adult & Family Development Community Based Environmental Project," which will use several media to educate youth and adults in a low income area of Houston County about the importance of their environment.

      The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department received $5,060 for its "Project for Learning Watersheds and Coastal Ecosystems," which increases teachers' awareness in rural school districts along the Texas coast about local ecosystems through global information systems and global positioning systems, among other tools.

      This year, EPA's Region 6 office received 52 entries from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Fifteen groups were selected to receive about $160,000 in environmental education grants. Since 1992, EPA has received between $2 and $3 million in grant funding per year and has awarded about 1,800 grants nationwide.
