EPA settles with Big RIver Zinc on hazardous waste violations; sets $24,054 penalty

CHICAGO (Oct. 8, 2009) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has settled with Big River Zinc Corp., Sauget, Ill., for alleged violations of federal hazardous waste regulations. A $24,054 penalty has been set.
Big River Zinc, located at 2401 Mississippi Ave., failed to properly store its hazardous wood and concrete demolition waste, include certain information in its emergency contingency plan, and maintain a record of employee training.
Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, EPA controls hazardous waste from its production to final disposal.
