STATEMENT FROM JOHN P. DeVILLARS REGARDING RI-DEM/AMERICAN SHIPYARD CASE

Recent allegations that have been raised about DEM's handling of an investigation regarding the American Shipyard Corp. are of serious concern. It is imperative that these allegations - and I stress at this time that they are allegations only - be investigated promptly and fully by an impartial and respected authority so that the facts can be discerned and reported to the public. To accomplish this task, I have requested that the agency's internal Inspector General's Office investigate the state's handling of this matter. As is standard practice, EPA will refrain from commenting on this matter until the investigation has been concluded.
