INTERNATIONAL CARIBBEAN AND NORTH AMERICA MEETING ON
PROTECTION OF CHILDREN’S HEALTH FROM ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS

The United States’ agenda and international organizations’ programs to protect children from environmental threats will be the focus of the principal session of III Regional Congress for North America and the Caribbean of the Inter-American Association of Environmental Engineers and Scientists being held next Tuesday, June 10, at Hotel San Juan in Puerto Rico. Children’s particular vulnerability to environmental contaminants will be outlined by Dr. Philip Landrigan, Special Advisor to EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner on children’s health risks. He chairs the Department of Community Medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. The centerpiece of the Group of Eight Environmental Leaders’ Summit last month was “Children’s Environmental Health.” In the declaration they urged that the upcoming Group of Eight Summit in Denver include children’s environmental health as “a high priority” and that international institutions “give further attention to children’s environmental health, in particular the environmental, economic and social dimensions of children’s health.” This emphasis will be the perspective of presentations at the San Juan meeting by officials of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund and the Pan American Health Organization. EPA officials will outline the Agency’s actions to change science, research and risk assessments to protect children’s health.
