EPA AND FDA SIGN NOTICE CLARIFYING THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ENSURING THE SAFETY OF ANTIMICROBIAL PRODUCTS
EPA and FDA issued a joint Federal Register Notice on Oct. 9 to clarify their responsibilities for regulating antimicrobial substances that can be found in a broad range of products, including such items as kitchen counter cleaners, vegetable rinses, packaging materials, and water used in food processing facilities, among others. The EPA and FDA are responsible for ensuring the effectiveness and safety of these products and in 1996 under the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) their regulatory responsibilities were modified. The joint notice summarizes the agencies’ interpretation of the FQPA provisions and clarifies their regulatory responsibilities. The notice was published in the Federal Register on Oct. 9 and is available on the Internet at: www.epa.gov/fedrgstr. Hard copies of the document can be requested by contacting 703-305-5017.
