Grant awarded for Oregon Coastal Rivers Restoration

Six communities along the Oregon Coast will receive over a quarter million dollars in grants for salmon restoration projects.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that six watershed restoration projects will receive money from the Exxon Valdez Settlement Fund to be combined with $390,000 in state funds.
The Governor’s Watershed Enhancement Board (GWEB) will receive the funds to support local governments’ and community groups’ coho salmon habitat restoration demonstration projects.  Leadership in restoring salmon habitat along the coastal rivers is vital to the overall recovery efforts, said Chuck Clarke, EPA’s Northwest Regional Administrator.  I can see other communities looking to these leaders for guidance on organizing more restoration projects.

The $253,000 grant will fund six projects:

• Tillamook River: Salmon passage improvement on Simmons Creek
• Tillamook Bay: Tidegate modifications
• Rogue River: push-up dam removal on the Illinois River
• Floras Creek: Riparian fencing and planting in Curry County
• Siuslaw River:  Whittaker Creek stream enhancement
• Umpqua River: Cutthroat trout spawning bed rehabilitation along Clover and Butler Creeks
